Repair Destroyed Ring
Paul came to us with a palladium wedding ring that had been completely destroyed. He was out cycling in Essex when he came across a ford and unwisely decided to go through. The water was a little deeper than he thought, and he came off his bike, losing his palladium wedding ring in the process.
Thankfully, he was okay, so once the water level had dropped, he returned to the site of the accident to find his ring. He was lucky enough to find it in a puddle of stones. However, the ring was destroyed; it looked like it had been run over by a car several times. Because the ring had so much sentimental value, he wanted to repair the destroyed ring.
1st Step to Repair Destroyed Ring – Reshaping
The first step to repair the destroyed ring was to heat it up. This process allowed us to reshape it into its former circular shape. Once the metal reached a certain temperature, it was rapidly cooled with water and then placed on a ring mandrel. A ring mandrel is a large, cone-shaped tool made from steel, used to form, shape, and reshape rings.
A rawhide mallet is used to beat the ring into shape against the mandrel. The rawhide is a perfect material to shape but not damage the ring further. When a perfect circle at the correct size was formed, the ring was removed from the mandrel
Removing Deep Scratches from the Destroyed Ring
Next, we needed to clean up the ring. Using emery paper (similar to sandpaper, but smoother), we removed the deep scratches from the destroyed ring.
Final Stage to Repair Destroyed Ring
To finish, the destroyed ring was given a thorough clean and polish to bring back its original dazzling shine. Once polished, it went into our ultrasonic machine to remove any excess polish and residue.
